Apocalypse: Translation
If you had asked Sally who she thought would teach her drive, she would have said Mike, or maybe John, if he could ever catch a break. She still can’t believe Kader volunteered.
Favors are funny things.
Slowly, he’s been making his way out of Lydia territory. He wants to do better; he’s convinced her of that. He’s made efforts.
She still has to gesture frantically at him more often than she’d like, but then again, she’s sure he’s tired of reminding her that swearing is not a mandatory part of city driving.
She has to admit, it’s nice having another person to talk to.
“I didn’t think he was big on children,” Kader says. “Easier on the brake.”
Even if she still has to deal with a fair share of misconceptions.
Sally shrugs, never taking her eyes from the road. “The only answer I can give you kind of sucks.”
“Okay?”
“Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé.”
“Exupéry?”
“Like I said, it’s a sucky answer.”
“I didn’t know the Commander spoke French.”
“He doesn’t,” she says, flipping the turn signal. “But you’ve gotta admit, it loses something in translation.”
(trans. “You become forever responsible for that which you have tamed.”)
