Of all the goddamn things she has been roped into, this may be the dumbest.

Really, it’s Mike’s fault. He’d made the joke in the first place, and he’d been the one to make it stick. If he’d just kept his mouth shut, she wouldn’t be in this position.

 

She likes Sally; really, she does. The little girl is sweet, and it’s been fun to watch her slowly come out from her shell, blossoming into a chatty, happy three-year-old. There are days Moore is still shocked Weir took the risk in keeping her, but she’s glad he did; the girl had suffered more than enough at the hands of the people who had raised her.

That decision may well be proof that the bastard has a heart after all.

But that doesn’t mean she meant to end up on “Mom” duty, fielding idiotic phone calls from a school that wouldn’t know a problem if it bit them — which Sally, thankfully, has not.

And whose fault is it?

Michael Powell’s.

It was a dumb joke, a tasteless joke, one he should have kept to himself. Red hair did not a genetic relation imply and to suggest otherwise was tacky — especially given the entirely genuine observations that, even with that red hair, Sally would have no trouble passing herself off as Weir’s by blood instead of extra-legal adoption.

“The little princess looks like you and Weir had a baby” is a thought that would have been left better off unsaid.

But, Powell had to do the exact opposite. Why would her boyfriend take pity, when he could inflict upon her the idea of sleeping with their boss?

The situation had only escalated from there.

“Weir,” she says, sticking her head into his office. “You have to go to school.”

“Why?” He asks, looking up from his laptop.

“Because apparently the answer to ‘when do you call 911’ is not the answer Sally gave them.”

“Which was?”

“When someone gets murdered or the house is on fire.”

She watches the man flounder for words for a moment. “Well … she’s not wrong.”

Eileen is not amused.
